Margate During the War Years

Between the years of both Wars Margate was a restricted area, and permission was needed from the Chief Constable, even if you were a local who had moved away on War Duties. Westgate was the Flying Corps base in 1914 for seaplanes until it moved to Manston in 1916. Margate itself was bombed 88 times in the Great War and as considered as a probable invasion site. During WW2 Margate was a major player in Operation Dynamo with over 50,000 troops returning via the Jetty.
