The Basics of Roullete

Roullete, meaning “little wheel,” is a popular casino game that has long brought glamour and mystery to the tables. This fast-paced game is easy enough for beginners to learn, yet offers a surprising amount of depth and betting options for experienced players.

Roulette is a gambling game in which players make wagers on which red or black numbered compartment of a rotating wheel the ball will land in as it spins around. Each bet is made by placing chips on a table that corresponds with the number or groups of numbers you are predicting, and there are several different types of bets.

The croupier spins the wheel, and a small white ball is released into one of the numbered compartments. When the wheel comes to rest, if your bet correctly predicts which number or type of bet you placed it in, you win money. A variety of other bets can also be made, such as whether the number is odd or even or if it is high or low.

There are two basic types of roulette wheels: a European wheel with 37 slots numbered 0 through 36, and an American wheel that adds a double zero. The house edge is slightly higher on the American wheel.

Before the spin, place your bets by putting chips on the betting board that correspond to your bets, and then giving the dealer money and asking for “color.” The dealer will give you coloured roulette chips with a value equal to the table’s minimum bet.

The Dozens Bet: Also known as douzaine in French, this bet places your chip(s) on either the first dozen (12 numbers), the second twelve (the second dozens), or the third dozens (18-36). The house gets its edge here because if the ball hits one of the 0’s or 00’s, you lose. The payout is 2-1. The Outside Bet: Also known as impair et pair in French, this bet consists of placing your chip(s) on the outside border of the layout. This bet pays 1-1 and covers all of the numbers except 0 and 00.
