The winners of the 2024 Hong Kong Art Prize were announced at a ceremony held on May 17. Pakistani artist Sameen Agha won the Grand Prize for her sculpture A Home is a Terrible Place to Love, which is carved from red marble and shows a house crumbling apart. Hong Kong’s Michelle Fung won the Vogue Hong Kong Women’s Art Prize for her mixed-media work Red Bean Stalk, and Demet from the Philippines took the Public Vote Prize with his painting Paint Palette Emulation.
A total of HK$40 million has been awarded to the winners of this year’s hk prize, including a record-breaking HK$10 million for first place. Other prizes included HK$5 million for second place and a HK$3 million award for third. The prize money will be used to further the work of the winning artists and their organisations.
In addition to the main prizes, there are several special awards for young students, which have also been increased. The scholarship for the best masters thesis in humanities, social sciences or law is now HK$30,000, while the prize for the most outstanding undergraduate paper has been raised to HK$20,000. The Hong Kong Cultural Development Board is committed to supporting and encouraging the study of culture in Hong Kong.
The hk prize is one of the most popular lottery games in the country and is operated by HKJC Lotteries Limited, a subsidiary of The Hong Kong Jockey Club. The draw takes place three times a week, on Tuesday, Thursday, and either Saturday or Sunday. Tickets are available from all Hong Kong convenience stores. During Snowball draws, the First Division Prize Fund is boosted to a pre-set amount, meaning that a single HK$10 winning unit can win a large sum of money.
Besides the main prizes, the hk prize also includes special awards for the runners who are from the local communities. Under the ‘Special Incentive Award for Marathon Challenge’, permanent residents who finish the race in under 3 hours for men or sub-3:30 for women can take home an extra prize of HK$10,000.
In a bid to encourage local people to take part in the Marathon Challenge, the title sponsor of the event, Standard Chartered Hong Kong, has additionally raised the marathon prize money for local participants. The 25th Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon will see the top 10 men and women who are permanent residents of Hong Kong receiving an additional prize of HK$10,000 each. This is in addition to the main marathon prize of HK$8 million.
