When it comes to beating the summer heat, there’s nothing quite like leaping into a swimming pool. With 44 public pools and dozens of beaches, Hong Kong has plenty of cool places to take a dip and unwind. Unfortunately, a shortage of lifeguards has left many of the city’s pools closed during the height of summer this year. The SCMP graphic below outlines some of the most popular pools and their current status.
While we’re thrilled to see the many new lifeguards hired at our city’s pools, it’s also sad that some are not available due to the ongoing coronavirus restrictions. If you’re planning to visit a public swimming pool, please check with the Leisure and Cultural Services Department website before heading out. Opening hours and schedules will vary by location and some pools are closed for cleaning or periodically for maintenance and repairs.
Some public swimming pools have lockers where you can store your belongings, but they require a coin for use. You can normally find a coin in a slot on the inside of the locker, but it’s a good idea to bring one along just in case! Some people may think this is a bit annoying, but it’s an easy way to keep track of your stuff.
Many professional pool builders will not quote a price for a new gunite pool (an in-ground pool) over the phone without seeing your home and understanding what you are looking for in your future pool project. The reason is that there are just too many variables in order to give you an accurate and fair estimate over the phone.
These variables include but are not limited to:
Pool Size – The size of the pool will impact its cost. Larger pools are typically more expensive than smaller ones. Pool Depth – A deeper pool will be more expensive to build than a shallower one. Water Type – Pools with saltwater will cost more to maintain than those with chlorine.
Aside from the obvious benefits of having a pool in your own backyard, there are countless reasons to consider investing in one. Not only is a pool great for exercise, but it can also be a fun place for your family to spend time together.
