Despite the lack of lifeguards, several public pools in Hong Kong have reopened this summer. At least 20 public pools may only partially open this summer and over 500 licensed private pools will not be able to open at all, according to the Hong Kong Recreation and Sports Professionals General Union (HKRSPGU). The government is working on ways to solve the problem, including increasing salaries for seasonal lifeguards and recruiting more staff on two-year contracts.
