The Hong Kong Prize and Other Awards

The Hong Kong Prize is a competition that gives young people from around the world the chance to win a free trip to Hong Kong for a week, as well as access to high-end facilities and experts in science. The contest is open to applicants from Southeast Asia, mainland China and the rest of the world. In addition to a free flight ticket, the winner will receive HK$2 million in funding sponsored by Bank of Hong Kong and a certificate of achievement.

The winning students will be provided with opportunities for training and mentorship in a wide range of scientific fields, including artificial intelligence and robotics, life sciences, new materials and energy, advanced manufacturing, and fintech, as well as the opportunity to work on cutting-edge projects at leading academic institutions in Hong Kong. They will also gain access to global networks and an extensive international platform to promote their work.

HK Foundation for Youth was established to support young people from Hong Kong to pursue their dreams, aspirations and potential. It has been supporting young people from Hong Kong for more than 30 years, and its award programs have become a flagship of the organisation. The Youth Scholarship, a flagship program of the Foundation, is awarded to students from low-income families who demonstrate exceptional ability and outstanding achievements in academic and extracurricular activities.

In the field of art, Hong Kong has a strong tradition of cultural creativity and innovation. Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts, for example, is one of the world’s most highly regarded theatre schools, with alumni who are now leading actors, directors, producers and designers around the globe. Hong Kong Contemporary Dance is another key dance company, whose performances have been recognised by the industry for their excellence and innovation.

This year, Hong Kong has had a record number of artists on the shortlist for the Art Prize, and more than two-thirds were women. The award’s judging panel said it was “a testament to the strength of female artists in Hong Kong.”

At the 2022 Gramophone Classical Music Awards ceremony – often referred to as the Oscars for classical music – the HK Phil became the first Asian orchestra to win the Orchestra of the Year award, in recognition of their live recordings of Wagner’s Ring Cycle on Naxos Records.

Veteran actor and martial artist Sammo Hung was honoured with a lifetime achievement award at the Hong Kong Film Awards on Sunday evening. He received a standing ovation for his performance as hitman-turned-noodle maker in black comedy Time. At 85, he is the oldest ever best actor winner at the Hong Kong Film Awards. He previously won the accolade in 2011 for The Stool Pigeon.
