The Sydney Peace Prize

The Sydney Peace Prize recognises solutions that prove peace with justice is possible. It celebrates the courage and dedication of people from all walks of life who work to global justice, honours their achievements on the Australian and Sydney stage and brings their stories to a wider audience. It is Australia’s only international prize for peace with justice and a flagship project of the Sydney Peace Foundation.

The Prize is presented annually to a person, organisation or project that has demonstrated extraordinary commitment and dedication to advancing human rights and addressing global issues of peace with justice. It is awarded for work that demonstrates a clear link between peaceful solutions and the advancement of human rights, with emphasis on those working to address global poverty, hunger, violence, discrimination, and war. The Prize holder receives $50,000 cash, a hand-made glass trophy designed by Brian Hirst and a week in Sydney to promote understanding of their work. This includes media engagements, a public lecture at the City of Sydney Town Hall, and engagement with students at Cabramatta High School.

SDY, like its sister fund SPY, is a popular choice for investors focused on dividends and capital appreciation. However, while SPY mirrors the performance of large-cap U.S. equities, SDY’s strategy is centered on the “dividend aristocrat” strategy of selecting companies that have consistently raised their dividends for 25 consecutive years. The result is a portfolio that is largely tilted towards mature, established firms and may not provide as much diversification as some investors may want. Nonetheless, the strong focus on current yield makes SDY a compelling choice for income focused investors. This is especially true as the fund continues to offer one of the highest current yields among dividend focused funds. A lower level of diversification also means that SDY can be more volatile than other funds in the same space.
