Data sgp is a collection of aggregated student performance data that teachers and administrators use to inform instructional practice, evaluate educators and schools/districts, and support broader research initiatives. It includes both individual-level measures like test scores and growth percentiles and aggregated measures at the school and district levels including class size, graduation rates, and attendance rates. The data sgp is provided by the Michigan Department of Education and is available through a variety of websites.
Growth percentiles are a useful metric that provides educators with an accurate and objective measure of student progress. Unlike traditional assessment metrics such as mean, median or mode, growth percentiles provide a snapshot of the relative performance of students on a given test section to their academic peers. These data help educators identify struggling students, differentiate instruction for high performing students and track the progress of students over time.
These percentages are reported on a 1-99 scale with higher numbers indicating greater relative growth. For example, a score of 75 indicates that the student’s raw score on a particular test has grown more than about 75% of their academic peers. Educators and parents can use this information to better understand student progress, identify areas for improvement, support classroom research initiatives and to evaluate teachers/schools/districts.
One key difference between SGP and standard growth models is that it provides educators the opportunity to compare teacher/student progress against official state achievement targets/goals. This allows districts to communicate to educators that proficiency must be reached within a specific timeframe and motivates teachers by linking their performance with measurable goals. This is an essential component of Michigan’s educator evaluation systems and is not possible with standard growth models alone!
SGP uses a wide-format data file called sgpData, which contains student assessment score progressions from 5 years of data. The first column in sgpData, ID, provides the unique student identifier and the next 5 columns (SS_2013, SS_2014, SS_2015, SS_2016, and SS_2017) contain the raw test score progression for each of the 5 years.
Using sgpData and SGP is straightforward, although there are some nuances in the data format that need to be understood. Please refer to the sgpData analysis vignette and SGP user guide for more detailed information.
